With pictures of trim midsections on its label, BioGenetic Laboratories’ HCG Activator is said to help you “lose up to 30 pounds.”

As the name implies, HCG Activator focuses on imitating the fat burning and appetite suppressing properties of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG).

I investigated HCG Activator to see if this “natural HCG alternative” really helps people lose weight.

What’s In HCG Activator?

HCG Activator contains one proprietary blend intended to promote fat burn and suppress appetite.

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Glycopeptide Stimulating Complex Blend (758 mg)

L-arginine is the precursor to nitric oxide (NO), a chemical many clinical studies show regulates fat and sugar metabolism.[1]

A 2005 clinical study on Zucker diabetic fatty rats show l-arginine supplementation for 10 weeks enhanced NO production by 71-85%. This resulted in significant abdominal and epididymal fat loss (44% and 25%).[2]

While these animal-based studies are promising, there is currently no clinical evidence showing l-arginine works the same way in humans.

L-ornithine is a non-essential amino acid with no direct connection to fat burn and weight loss. However, researchers believe l-ornithine promotes human growth hormone (HGH), which is proven to improve metabolism, promote fat burn, and facilitate lean muscle growth.[3][4]

It’s unclear exactly how much l-ornithine is needed to promote HGH production. However, one clinical study on 12 bodybuilders found 170 mg l-ornithine was needed to raise serum HGH levels.[5]

It’s unknown if HCG Activator contains similar ingredient amounts.

N-acetyl-l-carnitine is an amino acid, a building block for protein and muscle.[6]

While clinical research shows n-acetyl-l-carnitine regulates metabolic rates, there is no clinical evidence linking it with better fat burn.[7]

Green tea leaf is clinically proven to promote fat burn and weight loss, as well as lower blood pressure and cholesterol.[8]

Many researchers believe green tea’s high catechin amount is the reason for the ingredient’s fat burning properties. One 2009 study on 132 overweight subjects found 625 mg catechins daily promoted significant abdominal and subcutaneous fat burn, resulting in better weight loss.[9]

Saffrolite saffron is patented saffron, an ingredient shown to significantly increase satiety. One 2-month study on 60 overweight women, found saffron reduced appetite, contributing to significant weight loss.[10]

Black cohosh is used mainly to treat menopause symptoms. [11] Its effectiveness here as a weight loss ingredient is questionable as one of its main side effects is weight gain.[12]

Huperine A acts as a cholinesterase inhibitor, found in several studies to improve cognitive abilities, possibly slowing Alzheimer’s disease.[13]

Its connection with fat burn or appetite suppression is unclear.

Is HCG Activator Effective For Weight Loss?

According to a majority of users on GNC.com, HCG Activator is effective for weight loss. The product currently has a score of 4 out of 5 stars from 305 users. Most users complimented the product on how well it suppressed appetite and promoted weight loss.[14]

bzdel2442 shares “This product works. . . I lost 10 lbs. in the in first week. . . I do have some hunger to go with it.”
morsejc exclaims “LOVE IT!!!! This supplement is the BEST way I have ever used to [lose] weight. I am not hungry and not jittery or starving.”
tdowell disagrees and points out “[t]ook the product as directed completely, including the Simeons diet and this product did NOT work. Was hungry, tired, and actually gained weight instead of losing.”

How To Use HCG Activator

Take 1 serving (2 capsules twice daily) with a full glass of water.

For optimal results, take on an empty stomach before meals.

HCG Activator’s label explains the product also “includes free diet plan!” and Dr. Simeons’ name is listed in small print.[15]

Dr. Simeons is the author of the article “Pounds and Inches: A New Approach to Obesity,” a 500 calorie diet plan written in the 1950s.[16]

Because HCG Activator should be used with this strict diet plan, it’s difficult to say if the ingredients are effective. People could be losing weight merely because they’re only eating 500 calories a day.

Is HCG Safe To Use?

Huperzine A is known to cause side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and incontinence.[17]

N-acetyl-L-carnitine causes upset stomach and a “fishy” odor in urine, breath, and sweat.[18]

Also, black cohosh causes side effects such as rash, cramping, and vaginal bleeding.[19]

The likelihood of these side effects is difficult to determine as BioGenetic Laboratories does not provide individual ingredient dosage information. However, most users did not experience these negative side effects.

It should be noted extreme diet plans such as this one are not recommended by physicians. 500-calories-a-day diets make it nearly impossible to fulfill nutrition needs. They cause vitamin deficiencies and promot the body to burn muscle mass for fuel, resulting in weaker metabolism.[20]
